George Russell believes that Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari marks the start of a brand new chapter for Mercedes, one that will reignite the team’s drive for success.
With Hamilton leaving after more than a decade at Brackley, Russell sees the change as bittersweet but full of potential for renewal.
Reflecting on Hamilton’s Legacy
Hamilton’s departure brings an end to an era defined by dominance from the Silver Arrows, with the seven-time World Champion leading Mercedes to unparalleled success, including eight Constructors championships for the team.
But the last three seasons have been tough for Mercedes, marked by struggles to recapture their former glory.
Speaking about Hamilton’s exit, Russell acknowledged the emotional impact it has had on the team. “We had a do on Thursday night altogether, looking back on some of his memories,” he said. “As painful as these three years have been, seeing those memories reminds the team that we can do it.”
Russell emphasized that while Hamilton’s absence will be deeply felt, his legacy serves as both a reminder of past achievements and an inspiration for the future. “We have the same team as during Lewis’s glory years,” Russell noted. “He even reminded us after qualifying in Abu Dhabi to stand tall and not forget the poles and wins we’ve had together.”
A Catalyst for Change
For Russell, Hamilton’s departure represents more than just the end of an era – it’s an opportunity for the team to reset and refocus. “It’s been a tough three years, and I think this change for everyone is really going to spark a lot of motivation,” he said. “Sometimes, change is really much needed.”
Russell views this shift as a chance to push forward, channeling the energy of the transition into renewed determination. With a strong team behind him, he is optimistic about Mercedes’ potential to return to the top.
Lessons Learned from a Champion
Beyond Hamilton’s skill on the track, Russell highlighted the personal lessons he has gained from his time alongside the F1 legend. “Seeing firsthand what a role model he is has been eye-opening,” Russell explained. “We all have this platform, and we have to use it correctly.”
Reflecting on the influence F1 drivers have, especially on younger fans, Russell recounted his own experience as a child who once idolized Hamilton. “I looked up to him the same way kids look up to us now,” he said.
One of the key lessons Russell has learned from Hamilton is the importance of composure under public scrutiny. “Sometimes, even if you want to express something, there are millions watching, and how you handle it matters,” Russell added.
Looking Ahead
As Mercedes enters 2025 and a new era without Hamilton, the team faces a significant challenge but also a new opportunity. Russell will step into a leadership role for the team and he’s very determined to lead Mercedes forward with all the lessons he learned in these last few years.
While Hamilton’s departure marks the end of a legendary chapter for Mercedes, Russell and the team are ready to embrace the change and aim to turn the page and write their next story of success.
