After 17 years of dedicated service at McLaren, Marc Cox has announced his move to Aston Martin from 2025, where he will become the team’s new chief mechanic.

This marks a significant career shift for Cox, who leaves behind a legacy of expertise and collaboration at the papaya-branded team.

Farewell to McLaren

Cox confirmed his departure from McLaren on social media, reflecting on nearly two decades with the team. “After 17 years with McLaren, it’s time for my next chapter,” he wrote. “It’s gone by so fast, I had a blast and met some amazing people along the way. I’ll miss you papaya family.

Cox’s long tenure at McLaren saw him work in various capacities, including his role as number one mechanic for Lando Norris a few years ago.

He transitioned out of the F1 paddock in 2021 to become crew chief for McLaren’s Extreme E operation, a move that introduced him to the challenges of a smaller and more versatile team environment.

Lessons from Extreme E

In his time with McLaren’s Extreme E team, Cox gained unique insights into operating with limited resources compared to Formula 1. Speaking about the transition in a 2022 interview, he highlighted the differences in managing car assembly and logistics within a much smaller team.

It’s not like I’m used to, where if you need a part, you wander around to a different part of the factory, and you go and pick it up,” Cox explained. “It’s a case of putting the order through and then waiting for that part to arrive.

The role demanded adaptability and teamwork, with Cox and his three colleagues frequently stepping outside their usual remits to build and maintain the Extreme E vehicles. “It’s such a small team, and such a new team as well. There’s only four of us, and we’ve all had to go outside of our remits at times, but everyone has done that and worked together well” he added.

A New Chapter with Aston Martin

As Cox prepares to join Aston Martin as their chief mechanic, he brings a ton of experience and expertise to the team from both Formula 1 and Extreme E.

His move comes at a pivotal time for Aston Martin, a team that continues to make solid moves toward becoming a frontrunner in the Formula 1 paddock.

This new role will see Cox return to the F1 grid, getting back with the fast-paced environment where his career began.

For Aston Martin, signing a seasoned motorsport professional like Cox shows off once again their commitment to strengthen their technical team as they aim for title success in the upcoming seasons.
